Hubby got me a vinyl cutter after Christmas and I've been working slowly but surely towards getting items ready. The first item is the Princess Aboard Vinyl Decal (in the works is a second decal and a line of different T-shirt and tank tops). Hopefully you guys like it :)

As a kid one of my favorite treats were the orange creamsicles that my mom would buy at the grocery store. As an adult I still love them. I'll sneak a box in the cart while grocery shopping and a I love, LOVE I tell you, the Dreamsicle flavored sno cones from the stand by my father's office.

So it comes to no surprise that when i tasted an alcoholic beverage that a friend told me tasted like this dreamy creamy orangey icy dessert from the heavens, I had to share it with y'all.

1-2 parts vodka
2 parts orange juice
1 part heavy cream
**over ice

Now that they've developed all these flavored vodkas and rums, I'm wondering if a whipped cream vodka or rum might make this EVEN better. I think it may be something I have to try.
The hubby had made a stop by her while he was down in Florida, and we'd gotten reports from the repairman, but I don't think I quite realized the massive amount of work that needed to be done aboard Jus'CrewZen till I climbed down the companionway about 3 weeks ago.

Overwhelming…… I guess this is one of those situations where it's good I don't get overly emotional (well at least about most things). But for a split second I looked around and could imagine myself feeling helpless and just crying. Throwing my arms up in the air, not knowing where to start, and suggesting we just sell her and start over.

But anyone out there who owns a boat, especially those who live on their boat or have lived on their boat know that "that" isn't really an option. You can't just trade in your kid b/c they rolled around in the mud, got sprayed by a skunk, fell in a bucket of black ink and then ran through your house and sat on your white couch. I mean, you may contemplate it, but it's not really an option.

Soot was covering every surface and mildew was coming in a close second. You couldn't sit down or touch anything without getting covered in some sort of black powder. They had pumped hundreds of gallons of saltwater down into the salon, enough for there to be standing water in the forward and aft cabins before the repairman pumped it out. (We have a HUGE bilge.) Somehow when they sprayed the water down it tore our blinds down off the ports in the salon and salt was also covering most surfaces.

The first day I threw away 4 dock carts full of stuff. All of the carpet was ruined. That wasn't too big of a blow, the carpet was only down b/c the previous owners had glued down the previous carpet to the teak. All of the comforters and bed pillows were ruined. This hit a bit hard. I know it sounds silly, but do you know how hard it is to find pillows to like? Or to find that comforter that is the perfect weight for both summer and winter?

Once I threw away the comforters and bed pillows things got easier. Throwing away all the pillows (except for 2 that had lighthouses on them) on the settees didn't hurt quite so bad. And by the time I started chunking away all the food behind the settees and in the galley, I was almost gleeful.
The first day consisted of throwing and making sure that our bunk was completely clean. I used vinegar to wipe (and re-wipe) every surface that surrounded our bunk. The second day finished wiping down every surface in our cabin. It took a while, and I even broke out the battery powered vacuum to get into all the corners, but it was worth it. The third day was scrubbing the floors, and we're familiar with how much I love that.
Wait? An RV? You might be wondering with the RV and the business if we've completely abandoned our dream of cruising. The answer is no, life just throws you some curveballs sometimes and you have to take it a step at a time.

I personally think the RV is perfect to always have on land for any sort of extended visit back to the states to see family. And my mother has already hinted that if we get tired of it, or need to get rid of it that her and Dad really like the pictures of it. I get this odd feeling she may be hoping we tire of it.

Living aboard pretty much makes transitioning into an RV a piece of cake. You already know about limited storage space and have experience of taking advantage of every square inch possible. I do feel a bit guilty though, it only took me a month and a half to get all but 2 of the curtains in the RV replaced (Jus'CrewZen only had the window coverings in the salon replaced).

The RV park is a bit different from the marina though. Bathrooms and Laundry facilities are the same, but (and maybe b/c it's winter) we haven't noticed as much of the socializing occurring in the park. One think that I have always loved about "The Boat Life" is that everyone is always talking with each other, swinging by to offer others to come over for a sundowner, and planning pot lucks and get togethers. We haven't found as much of that at the park, but hope to as it warms up.

DIY Watermakers is growing faster that we every thought possible. It's truly been hard setting goals b/c every one we think about setting one the company leaps over it. So we've started planning for a company model that will continue to allow us to grow and still keep cruising a reality. It may take a little more effort and time getting it all set up, but it'll be worth it in the end.Princess Aboardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02043124412978504236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7287203767107223982.post-41502596575216387292013-02-26T04:00:00.000-08:002013-02-26T04:00:09.525-08:00The Winds of Change - Pt 2
So the boat is "safe" with bilge pumped out and the hubby goes into surgery. I have some very cute pictures of him before surgery in his sexy little hospital gown that I will refrain from posting……..for now. They gave him 2 nerve blocks in his shoulder before surgery, b/c the first one didn't work. And after surgery none of the painkillers or muscle relaxers were working either.

One nurse in the recovery room wasn't exactly the nicest and just wanted to get us out of there. But the other was a godsend and if I every figure out her name she will receive a large bouquet of flowers. The Dr, anesthesiologist, and head nurse had all come in and said there was nothing they could do. But the other nurse had the bright idea to ask if she could try giving him phengrine through his IV. AND IT WORKED!!! It had him sleeping like a baby within 30 minutes, which FINALLY allowed his shoulder muscles the time to relax.

Phenegrine coupled with lots of juice over the next week provided him more relief than any of the others prescriptions. With the hubby sleeping that meant that the Princess could finally catch up on some of her beauty sleep too.

The next couple months were filled with healing and more boat shows. But unfortunately still no getting back down to Jus'CrewZen to survey the damage. There was Thanksgiving and Christmas thrown in there for good measure too.

We decided that the room to rent was just too small if we were going to be spending any time in Charlotte together, and since DIY Watermakers is headquartered out of Charlotte we figured we would be spending more time there. So we found ourselves a "cruiser" for the land, or as some people like to call them RVs.

We still own a house in TX, and with our "home" in Miami, it seemed silly to buy anything in Charlotte. And I have a problem with wastefulness, so an apartment was totally out of the question. Just like our boat, the RV almost jumped into our laps and was "perfect" for us.Princess Aboardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02043124412978504236noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7287203767107223982.post-64361235320394906952013-02-24T12:56:00.000-08:002013-02-24T12:56:36.304-08:00The Winds of Change
There's a quote out there right? About "Life is what happens when you're making plans", or something to that effect. I blogged about the plane crash, but haven't blogged about anything that has really occurred or changed since. So how about I bring everyone up to speed.

Before the plane crash, the hubby was about to be on his way to Miami, FL to continue moving Jus'CrewZen up the east coast. We had her on a mooring at Dinner Key while we started up DIY Watermakers and moved our land base from Houston, TX to Charlotte, NC. Now it was time to get her somewhere around the Myrtle Beach area. Or so, that was the plan.

Then the plane crash happened and left the hubby with a torn labrum. Things could have been much worse, so we were thankful that was "big" injury. But it meant that the hubby would be doing no sailing, motoring, or boat moving in general. In fact, he was now stuck in Charlotte w/ me 7 days a week in the room I was renting in a young couple's house. (The room was supposed to be a place to sleep while I worked my M-F, 9-5 job, and then I would head out on the weekends to the coast and my hubby.)

Then came the orthopedic appointments, MRI's, and all that jazz. About a month to month and a half after the plane crash the hubby and his shoulder were scheduled for surgery. We were counting down the days to surgery b/c the muscles from his neck, down into his shoulder had been in painful spasms for weeks. Even the cortisone shot only relieved him for a small period of time, and allowed him to sleep for a night. The Dr let us know that when a shoulder injury occurs that the surrounding muscles will try and compensate for the pain and in turn end up causing pain themselves. Not a very pleasant Catch 22, but then are Catch 22s ever pleasant?

The DAY BEFORE his surgery, we received a call saying that Jus'CrewZen had a fire. With no option of going down to Miami b/c of the muscle spasms and the surgery being scheduled, we felt pretty helpless for awhile. It turns out the fire was in the engine room, and was put out before causing too much damage (more on that later). Our biggest problem at this point was pumping out the hundreds upon hundreds of gallons of salt water that they had pumped down into her, to put out the fire.

After a couple of calls we were able to find a man to bring in a battery and a boost pump and empty our bilge. I'll try and find his information to pass along, but if you every need honest work done in Miami he's the guy to call.

In addition to wiping soot and mildew off every single surface on the inside of the boat, I also got to do my FAVORITE task today. Scrubbing floors….on my hands and knees.

You see, when they pumped the water into the boat to put out the fire, about 4 inches of it remained standing in our aft cabin. So after throwing away the carpet in the cabin, I needed to scrub the floors. And "somehow" our deck brush went missing and I was relegated to using a hand held scrubber. (I'm still convinced that my hubby had something to do with this…)

Its times like these when I am soooooo happy that the hubby doesn't have the "Cinderellee" song that the little mice sing. Because I'm almost certain that if he did, he would have been singing it gleefully as I scrubbed.

We have owned Jus'CrewZen for two years, and I have now scrubbed the floors in the aft cabin twice. That means that on average I end up scrubbing floors once a year. I'm not quite sure how I feel about this. Scrubbing floors isn't as gross as, let's say "head duty", but it isn't exactly the glamorous life of a Princess if you know what I mean.

These are the days when I pull on the rubber gloves and long for my tiara that sits just out of reach **sigh**

My whole life I've enjoyed doing crafts, I've enjoyed decorating, making things pretty..... And luckily I've actually gotten much better in the past few years than I was when I was in my teens and 20's. I don't credit this to anything I've done except for taking some "Paint and Sip" classes. Amazing how much better you paint after a few glasses of wine, and the promise of a sushi bar next door so you can gorge yourself after class until the wine wears off.
Most recently the hubby and I went on a date night to a glass fusion class. He only has one good arm right now, so obviously his piece was limited. But I think I have some delusional expectations about the amount of craft time that I will have available once I can start cruising full time. In my brain I picture myself painting on a beach, or from the aft deck. That I'll have time to arrange flowers and sew all sorts of port coverings for the boat. But then I have the sneaking suspicion that I won't have much more time for crafts than I do now. And I'm fairly sure my hubby will tell me we don't have room for craft stuff, but I think I'll keep my delusion around for a bit longer.

What type of crafty stuff do my cruiser friends actually find themselves having time to do?Princess Aboardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02043124412978504236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7287203767107223982.post-9558293761753229412012-11-25T08:45:00.000-08:002012-11-25T08:45:25.869-08:00Mani-Pedi Withdrawal
Warning: This blog falls into the "Princess" category

From the ripe age of 15 or 16 I have always had my nails done. Notice I said "had my nails done" NOT "did my nails". I've always had tiny nail beds and loved the way that fiberglass and solar nails look. My natural nails will grow, but they grow out at wonky angles and they start curving under on the edges. Also, I'm pretty bad about breaking a nail and then letting the fact that they're uneven drive me CRAZY. I've literally broken a nail at the beginning of the day, not had a pair of clippers, and it driven me so bonkers that I trimmed the other 9 nails with a pair of scissors just so they would match lengths. You may make your jokes about OCD or anal retentiveness now, I have no shame.

Now, I realize that while cruising I am not going to be able to have my nails done and most likely my poor innocent little nails will become less than attractive. (It's ok little nails, don't cry.) So I am desperately trying to figure out what to do. For the past few months I've stopped getting my nails done and been trying "at home" solutions. "Acrylics" laughed in my face and made jokes about my sculpting skills to "Solars". **sigh** Regular Nail Polish, even the good stuff, would chip, crack, and peel within 24 hours IF I managed not to mess them up before they dried. "Press Ons" - have these ever worked for anyone? EVER?

So we're left with Gel Nails. They paint on like polish - sounds easy, right? You put them under a UV light that "cures" them - and yes, I'm wondering what the AMP draw on that little baby is. But then it's hardened and stays that way for 2 wks. No chips, no cracks. If my nail breaks, it just breaks. I don't have to worry about fake nails that would rather rip off your entire nail than break. Sounds like a pretty good deal. What could go wrong???

So it's question time again. How do my cruising friends care for their nails? Have you completely given up or do you have any secret tricks?

P.S. I did just buy a Pedi Egg for my feet, I think my toenails are at least a battle I can win :)
The hubby and I aren't very political. But one thing we've always felt comfortable being vocal about, was that we wish one candidate would come out and set the bar by stating that he would not say anything negative about his opponent or what his opponent has done. Instead he would focus on the positive things he's done and will do. We like to think this would create a new standard.

And maybe it wouldn't and this is just some lofty pipe dream of ours. But it is the way we've decided to do business, and we're pretty excited that we've seen it in other companies as well. We've decided that we won't put down or talk bad about any other Watermaker company. What they say about us, is their own business. But we're choosing to take the stance that each company has something special to offer. And we will sell our units by focusing on what we have to offer and NOT by telling you what the other companies don't offer.

We had the pleasure of meeting Rich from Cuise RO at the Annapolis Boat Show and everything we'd heard about him so far was true. He's a great guy with great products to offer. We had a customer contact us this week and say that Rich had great things to say about us too, and that spoke volumes to him about both of our companies. Maybe next time we can actually share a drink with him instead of just dropping off a Bloody Mary and running to pack up and hit the road.
With the craziness of boat shows and TV appearances for the hubby, we have barely had a chance to breathe. So today we jumped in the car and drove 90 miles north to the Harvest Festival at Shelton Vineyard.
I think here in the Carolinas that the chill may be in the air to stay for awhile, so we started off our visit inside with the wine tasting. (Hey, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.) We found a really nice Port and the Riesling was pretty good too. And Port is good for warming up the insides, so after the tour we got a bottle to drink as we enjoyed the festival outdoors. A tractor pulled us around on a hay ride and we listened to some Bluegrass. Hubby heard the banjos and got a little nervous…

There are certain calls that I wife should not have to wait for. One from the coast guard, to tell you if your husband is alive or dead, is one of them.

Thursday, September 20th it was early evening and I was finishing up some computer work when I received a call on our DIY Watermakers 1-800 number. I was asked if my hubby was on a plane with his friend flying from Texas to Florida and if he was that the coast guard had been in contact regarding an emergency on the aircraft. The line disconnected and I was left with a feeling of disbelief and the taste of metal in my mouth.

I'm not sure why it happens, but when your heart and stomach feel like they're both battling for who gets to reach your mouth first, I taste metal. From my early 20's the taste of metal and fear have been synonymous with each other. Not the "I'm being chased by a bear" fear, or the "a big spider just landed on my arm" fear. Not the fear that causes your adrenaline to spike and everything to become clear, but the fear that is accompanied by a deep seated knowledge that everything may NOT be OK.

The next few hours were very surreal. I had called the local Galveston Coast Guard office and they had put me in contact with their district office out of New Orleans. After I rattled on about not knowing if the call had been real or a prank, the Coast Guard officer informed me that an emergency had occurred on the aircraft over the Gulf of Mexico and helicopters and boats were on their way. He had no more information than that, but thanked me for calling and assured me that as soon as they knew something they would call me back.

They also asked for physical description and photos. I think it was then that it started sinking in that the helicopters and boats were looking for bodies, not people. I stared at my phone for the next hour waiting for it to ring. I knew that if the plan had gone down in the ocean that the chance of them surviving was very slim. And even if they survived the crash, would they be found out in the ocean with no life raft and darkness approaching. At this point all I could hope for was that the emergency beacon had gone off by accident, b/c I knew that if they crashed that the Coast Guard would be calling to tell me my husband was dead.

At some point my brain starting clicking enough to call my parents and let them know what was going on. Besides that I was in a fog, a haze just sitting and waiting for the worst.

My phone rang a couple of hours later and I scrambled to answer. The Coast Guard told me that he had "Good News" and honestly what he said after that didn't matter much. The words "alive" and "very very lucky" were about all I heard. I thank him profusely and he let me know that they would inform my husband to call me as soon as the helicopter landed. I hung up the phone and cried tears of relief.

As my Dad said "that's real grown up stuff to have to go through", and I hope it's not something either of us have to ever go through again. He is OK, they floated for about 3 hours but I'll let him tell his side of the story more in depth later. It is funny how things like this make you appreciate each other, and make you realize that every time you say goodbye to someone that it may be the last. So don't waste your time on petty fights, whose right or wrong, and you can never say I Love You enough. We've joked around about it a lot this past week b/c if you think too hard about it you just can't help but cry.

So in case y'all didn't already know. I love my hubby and he's everything I could have ever hoped for in a partner, a friend, a soul mate.

My baby beside me at the wheel. I finally got all of the things finished up
in Texas and have head eastward to relocate offices, work on the new business,
and cruise with the hubby up and down the east coast for a while.

First off I do have to give a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who
has visited the new web page for DIY Watermakers. The response this first week has been
overwhelming (in a good way) and a lot of it has been coming from this blog’s
readers. So, a big virtual hug for
everyone reading this! And if we ever
meet in person I’ll give you a cookie too.

Now, a cross country road trip could be boring for
some. But with the hubby, the princess,
and Bella the “diva cat” in the car it’s been pretty interesting. I am pleased to announce that Bella slept the
entire first day. Sometimes sleeping so
deep that I did the “mom” thing and tugged on some hair or an ear until she
moved just to make sure she was still alive.

We have gotten to experience a seedy roadside motel where we
stopped because it was beside the Waffle House we stopped at and we were both
exhausted and it met our requirement of “had a deadbolt on the door and a bed
we would both fit in”. I’m pretty sure I
wouldn’t have stayed there alone, but the only safety issue we encountered were
the ninja ants that kept biting us in bed but then disappearing before we could
find them. I knew it was ants because I
saw a trail of them in the bathroom the next morning. Sneaky little bastards.

But it hasn’t been all possibly dead cats and seedy
motels. We had a flat tire too! Not to worry, several southern gentlemen came to our
rescue and helped us put a plug in and get along on our way. Even the gas station attendants had “southern”
hospitality and charm. I don’t think I’ve
ever had a more delightful roadside emergency experience!

The drive through the mountains has been beautiful and I can’t
wait to experience the east coast.

Today’s post has been brought to you by my favorite drink
and slightly embarrassing fact about my childhood.

The other night I was introduced to possibly the most genius
idea since the invention of the iPhone.
A Bloody Mary…..(wait for it)….garnished with a Slim Jim. This bar had taken the Sunday Bruncher’s
excuse to drink alcohol before noon and made it EVEN BETTER! Let me break it down for you – how to make
this amazing drink.

Start with an empty glass and “salt” half the rim. But instead of using salt, use a Cajun seasoning
called Slap Ya Mama. Then fill with Ice
and pour in about 2 fingers of your favorite vodka. I like Ivanabitch in my Bloody Mary, and just
this weekend learned that the bottle also fits in my wine bottle Woozie. Pour in about 1 finger of Lime Juice, a
splash of Olive Juice, and fill up the rest of the glass (about an inch and a
half below the rim) with Zing Zang Bloody Mary Mix.

Now it’s time to garnish.
Take a Slim Jim and cut it in half so that you have 2 shorter beef jerky
sticks, place one in the glass like a straw.
Take a piece of celery and do the same thing with it. Stick a toothpick/plastic sword thru 2 large
green olives and drop on top along with 1 pickled okra. Then sprinkle about 4-5 “hot” green beans on
the top and you have the ULTIMATE Bloody Mary.

So at this point you have my awesome drink recipe and you’re
probably waiting for me to fess up about the slightly embarrassing fact about
my childhood and where this blog’s title came from.

When I was about 7 I learned that cartoons were not real and
had to find human versions of my childhood crushes. Robin Hood the Disney character was a bit
difficult, but my other crush was He-Man.
So when you’re 7, who looks like He-Man?
Hulk Hogan, that’s who. So at 7 I
started watching wrestling every chance I got.
I grew up around arm wrestlers, body builders, power lifters. So these guys didn’t look that odd to
me. And I watched Soap Operas (go Days

(insert Happy Watermaker Dance here)

www.diywatermakers.com

I've been a little blog quiet lately, and that's because the hubby and I have been "heads down" the past couple of weeks getting this new company online (and yes, I did create a Happy Watermaker Dance that hopefully will be catching on at dance clubs across the world very soon).

It's probably no surprise to anyone, but one of my big wants with a side of pretty pretty please and a cherry on top, has been a Watermaker. I begged and pleaded until the hubby figured out a way to get me one. After that it was like a snowball rolling downhill as we talked to more and more cruisers who wanted Watermakers too, but they just couldn't justify spending the money that the other brands on the market were costing. And even if they could get together the money to buy one, they would never be able to afford replacement parts. So, with building this company, it became our goal to build a product with the same high quality that has become expected of the other brands on the market, but without the high profit margin built in.

Oh, and the naysayers chimed in with their "It's too good to be true". But to be honest, it shouldn't be. We've created a system with high quality components, easy to install, and finally solves the problem that smaller boats have had in the past with trying to find a place to put a Watermaker with an output high enough for the serious cruiser . Oh yes, our smallest producer is a minimum of 15 gallons per hour, with our "Big Boy" pumping out a minimum of 60 gallons per hour. All the while being able to run off one of the little bitty Honda Generators.

But the hubby couldn't stop there..... He had to ensure that there was no possibility of any of those tiny microorganisms ruining the Princess's otherwise heaven on earth. So he did his research and found a sterilization system to add after the water has exited the Watermaker.

Then it was the Princess's turn to put up a bit of a fuss over the distinct "distilled" water taste coming out of the sinks. So the hubby went in search of a system to rejuvenate the water back to the taste you would expect of your "spring" bottled water. We are the only Watermaker company to have both of these add-on systems available for our Watermakers!

Oh and I almost forgot! We also have a fully functional Facebook page. So come "like" us and watch for pics we post as we have a booth at our first boat show!
Not your typical title for a blog about date nights, but we’re
not your typical couple.

After a week in Miami that left us wishing we were back in
Key West, the hubby surprised me with a date night. I don’t have your typical “girl” taste in
movies, so getting to see the new Batman movie was right up my alley. I won’t lie, I got a tad excited and it made
me want to pull out my old Batman movies and TV shows and cuddle up with the
hubby for a marathon on the salon floor.

You may laugh but it’s a bit hard to cuddle on a settee in
the salon, so every now and then I make us a pallet with pillows and we like to
settle in with a few drinks. Or we break
out the Wii and go head to head with some Super Mario Bros 3. Heck when it’s too hot at night to sleep in
the cabin, I’ve been known to crash on the salon floor. I can sleep anywhere…..it’s a gift.

But I digress…back to date night. The movie was awesome and my date was the
best. We even munched on some popcorn
coated in movie theatre butter and topped with jalapenos. Hey, don’t knock it till you try it. Then we took a stroll around the complex and
headed back home.

The next night we headed to New Orleans for another date
night. Not on the boat though, we
actually jumped in that crazy metal thingy with wheels and sped down the
interstate at lightning speed (or 80ish mph).
This may sound like a crazy thing for cruisers to do, but I had hotel
points and we deserved a night out just enjoying each other. We spent most of the night walking up and
down Bourbon Street people watching, checking out the sites, doing the normal “budget
cruiser” thing. But the hubby did buy us
2 hand grenades because I had never had one before and they came with these
neat Jell-O shots in syringes for free.
And who amongst us can really pass up free drinks?
AKA Dinghy Butt

We’re at dinner with our friends Scott and Natalie the other night giving them our top 5 tips for cruising. Now while the hubby has important tips like – know your dinghy engine inside and out, be able to take apart and rebuild said dinghy engine at night (blindfolded with both hands tied behind your back). My tips were more along the lines of – baby powder is your friend, and consider having a special “dinghy riding outfit” if you’re going somewhere nice.

I have come to the conclusion that my hubby gets great joy out of soaking my bottom every time we go on a dinghy ride. His may get wet every now and then, but every single time I have a wet soggy bottom. I swear he does this on purpose. I do understand that a wet soggy bottom is a potential hazard for a good number of dinghy rides….but every single one?

Many of you couples may position yourselves while riding in the dinghy much like we do; my hubby sits further back by the engine and steers, while I sit on the opposite side in front of the halfway point. Yes, I realize I could use my feminine power and steer the dinghy myself. But if I’m honest I like to enjoy the ride and let the hubby do the work. Yes ladies and gentleman, there are reasons he calls me Princess.

Normally the drenching occurs when we have to cross the wake that another boat so politely leaves in our path. He maneuvers the dinghy so that “according to him” it’s best for the dinghy. Which conveniently causes a big splash to come up over the side and thru the fabric protecting my bottom. Coincidence? I think not!

I have gotten to where I either wear sundresses, with swimsuit bottoms underneath, and take the ride with my sundress pulled up and tied around my ribcage or I wear one outfit in and change clothes in a bathroom. This may sound like I’m being prissy or taking extreme measures, but a wet bottom means more than just an unsightly dark spot “down there”. If you’re walking around in 90 degree plus heat, it means “Hello chafing, here I come” – hence the need for baby powder. Princess Aboardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02043124412978504236noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7287203767107223982.post-26436590529018976722012-08-08T20:10:00.000-07:002012-08-08T20:10:10.208-07:00Princess Aboard’s Guide to the Dry Tortugas

From the title you will notice that this is MY guide to the
Dry Tortugas. You can probably do it in
a shorter trip, or a longer one, but this was “in my opinion” what I would do
if I was to do it again. I’ll try to
make note for cruisers as well as those camping.

Come Prepared

The Dry Tortugas are primitive, and I mean primitive for
visitors. The workers and volunteers who
work there have access to things like running water, trash cans, AC, and
internet….. You will not. If you want a shower, you will need to bring
your own water. You can pick up a cheap
and efficient solar shower at Wal-Mart in the camping section if you do not
have one already. They are about $7 and
half as expensive as their counterparts at Bass Pro Shops and other outdoor
shops. If you want to cook; they do have
charcoal grills on the park but you will need to bring your own charcoal and
lighter fluid. Bring things that will
require very little trash. You will not
have access to trash cans and you will need to police and take your own trash
off of the island. There is also a $5
fee per person for the park, we did not know this showing up and felt quite
embarrassed (none of the research we did, showed a fee). And let me say it right here - - - >
SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN. I
normally do fairly well with the NOAD 15 SPF lotion. I’m also naturally olive skinned and come
from a family with a bit of a Cajun background.
I wish I would have brought a 45 or higher, extreme waterproof, spray
on. I didn’t get burned per say, only
the top of my forehead and nose b/c I was wearing a visor and the sun went all
ninja and found a way in the top. And the
spray would have also made it easier to get to my scalp. But if I applied sunscreen as religiously as
I did, then I’m guessing those who are not as olive skinned as me could get
themselves in a heap of trouble.

How Do I Get There

If you are a cruiser – this part is easy. It took us an overnight jump from Key
West. If you are not one of the lucky
few to own or live on a boat you have a couple of options. There is a high speed ferry from Key West
that leaves early in the morning travels for a couple of hours, stays at the
fort about 4 hours and then travels back.
They provide lunch and dinner (I believe) and alcoholic drinks are for
sale for a very reasonable price. I
believe I also heard that they have kayaks and snorkeling gear for you to
borrow free of charge. You can also
arrange with the ferry to ride in one day, camp a few days, and then ride back
with them. There is also a sea plane
that comes in and out about 5 times a day.
I would personally take the ferry if we didn’t have a boat, but hey,
that’s just me.

How Long Should I Stay

I know if you take the ferry you can arrange an overnight or
couple of overnight stays. I suggest
planning to spend 3 days at the Dry Tortugas.
Any less and you may miss something (because you’re tired and worn out)
and any more than that and you might get a little run down if you’re not the
cruising type. Depending on how you got
there, your access to “cool down” methods, and the time of year will have a big
influence on how long you want to stay. I
had pretty much decided that if I had one of those chairs that sits in the
water, and a waterproof kindle….you couldn’t have pried me away.

Time of Year

heat. When you’ve been snorkeling,
swimming, walking on the beach, and

climbing up and down the stairwells at the
fort; you really want the ability to cool down at the end of the day. If you’re a cruiser, you know that there are
still chores to be done while you’re here.
And when it’s 90+ during the day (and you don’t have access to AC) it’s
tiring just to do dishes. The water here
is amazing, so I really suggest staying in it as much as possible.

Things To Do

The reason I said a 3 day stay is because while we were here
there were 3 major things to do (unfortunately while we were here a lot of the
keys were shut down due to turtle mating season). I also suggest doing these things in this
order. In my experience you want to have
your most active day at the beginning, with your lease active day with the most
impact at the end.

Fort Jefferson – There is a tour
provided for everyone who comes by ferry and seaplane. On all sides of the fort, expect for the
harbor side, there is swimming and snorkeling around the moat. It’s neat snorkeling, but by far the least
impressive of the 3 sites. YOU WANT TO
BRING A CAMERA!!! Even a very novice photographer
like me can take amazing pictures out here.
I also suggest bringing a backup, even if it’s in the form of your
iPhone.

Loggerhead Key – The backside of
the key has the most impressive snorkeling of the entire US, so do not miss
it! You’ll even make friends with the
local barracuda if you’re anything like me :/
Walking around the beach during turtle season even gives you the
opportunity to look for turtle tracks, nests, and baby turtle tracks. Loggerhead Key is about 3 miles from Fort
Jefferson. It is quite the kayak
trip. The park rangers suggest that you
come by to borrow a radio from them and call in when you depart and when you
head back to the fort.

Windjammer Wreck – This lies about
a mile off the tip of Loggerhead Key. It
is marked by a buoy, but is a tad hard to see.
We were told it was ¾ a mile off the tip, but we kinda beg to differ
that it’s further than that. It’s a
wreck shallow enough to snorkel, although I do believe I saw a few dive boats
and divers out there as well. After
doing Fort Jefferson and Loggerhead Key you “may” be tired, but it is well
worth it. Trust me on this one.

If you have spent any time on a boat this is something you will have to deal with. You will just be sitting there and next thing you know your nostrils will be accosted by one of the most foul and hateful odors your nose has ever experienced. Then just as quickly that it crept up on you and beat your nose to a bloody pulp its gone. It leaves no trail where it came from or where it went. All you know is that you want to take care of it, but deep down in the pit of your stomach you can feel the gut wrenching bile inducing knowledge that it will be back to haunt your nose again.

Now, when you take a boat offshore you will no doubt stir up things and smells from the deepest and darkest areas of the bilge that cannot be reached or more appropriately cannot be cleaned. Hmmmmm, maybe the Princess could stir up one of her 5 inch fairies and command it to do the task instead of sending them to call on the weather gods to torment me while I am at sea. But that is for another day.

So, I am about 30 miles offshore after leaving Destin. My great weather Guru James Dobbins has once again divined what I will be expecting when I am out there. He has nailed it on the head. He called the rollers in the pass and the flat seas further out. His wind predictions are right on the money. Weather is a huge thing for the offshore sailor and getting reliable weather is a godsend. (Remember NOAA brags about getting right 57% percent of the time. Wish I could have a job like that) Chris Parker be damned want me some James Dobbins weather routing.

So anyway back to the story. I am 30 miles offshore and enjoying the crystal clear blue water water. Flying fish are skittering across the top of the water and overall it is just a pure joy. Did I mention that a pod of Dolphins had also opted to use JusCrewZen as a play toy for a few minutes. Things were going great. This should be a simple two day run to Tampa.

Ok, here is where you cue the ominous music. My nose gets throughly accosted by this horrific odor. This is when I look up and see that the Princess has left a pair of her shoes right by the companionway hatch. Now you guys don’t understand, the only place that the Princess produces odor is through her feet. And we are not talking about some little dainty odor either. We are talking full fledge swing a bat and Hank Aaron a ball over the outfield odor. I have actually considered hanging her shoes over the side and seeing if they would be like dynamite and all of the fish would float to the surface, but then the odor contamination may infect the fish. Plus, I am pretty sure Florida Parks and Wildlife would have major issues with the shoes being the cause of red tide and massive fish kills. Not real sure what I can or will do about the shoes.

I move over near the shoes and thn I realize that is not were the smell is coming from. If is coming from down below. With further inspection I notice that it is coming from the engine room. I pop the hatch open and thats when I realize I am in a world of hurt. I have a fire.

What to do! What to do!

FIRE! FIRE! RUN IN CIRCLES! STOP DROP AND ROLL!!! OH SH@T!! OH SH@T!!

As of right now there are no flames, but there are these nostril searing tendrils of smoke billowing out of the engine compartment. I look around and notice that there is no power to the panel. As I look I notice that a ground wire has become one with my main house bank supply line. Now kids, don’t do this at home. I reach over and pull the two wires apart and shut down all of the power supply switches. I am now sitting offshore with no power and no way to start the engine. Let me mention that while this is going on I have the main, the jib and the mizzen completely out. There is not enough wind to make them luff. All I have is my own ingenuity. (Thats a scary thought huh)

Well I spend close to an hour pulling the main battery wire out of the bundle. It has melted itself to several of the other wires. I get it pulled from the system. I need this wire to get the engine started and to run all of the boats systems. No I do not have a replacement for it. What to do?

I broke out the roll of blue painters tape and began wrapping the wire. My idea is to insulate it from being able to touch anything else just long enough to get me to the nearest port.

Look out Panama City here I come.

Ok so one of the reasons I did not want to go offshore from Houston to Pensacola was that I did not want to pound my boat unnecessarily. I looked over the weather and decided that this would be a great day to head to Panama City. (You will notice that the heading of this article does not say from Pensacola to Panama City.) I knew that it was going to be a little rough when I got offshore but was ok with that as it was supposed to flatten out and become an enjoyable ride.

As I entered the Pensacola channel to make my exit the seas built to 4 foot rollers with the occasional 6 to 8 thrown in there for good measure. I was thinking to myself that this is normal and that they would pass. Four hours later I had cover a measly 10 miles and was making virtually no headway. The wind was on the nose and the seas were 4 to 6 and basically my life was being made to be miserable. I immediately began looking at the charts trying to see what I could do. This is when I spotted Destin as a port of call and with my course change it would let me offset my motoring with a little sailing.

I liked this idea, instead of pounding I would be able to sit in a nice anchorage and wait till I had a better window. (Little did I know what was to come of this) I immediately make the course corrections and because of the fact that I was able to get my jib out the boat settled down a little and began taking the waves much better. The computer was showing that I would make the entrance to the channel sometime a little after 9PM.

Now, everyone always says never make port at night. Well, I am one of those sailors that has never made a port during the day. No matter how much I have planned for it, it just has never worked out that way. Now here I am looking at arriving at Destin after dark. No Problem. Right???

I reviewed the charts. I reviewed the satalite immagery of the area. I called friends and had them look everything up. I was prepared. I can do this.

As I get a little closer to the entrance, I start looking at the lights. They look a tlittle weird. Instead of lining up and leading me into the channel the red and greens are side by side and kinda lead off into a weird angle. Well, maybe my eyes are just playing tracks on me. I line the boat up so that I will make a direct run at the narrow entrance. I ignore the markers (Never wise and you are about to see why). I head right for the opening. I have a following sea and am surfing the 6 foot rollers into the harbor. All of sudden my depth sounder begings screaming at me. I have gone from 30 feet under the boat to less than a foot (That wasn’t on the charts). All of a sudden the boat is picked up and turned sideways. I am ok with this except for the fact I am quickly losing water from underneath boat again. This is when I realize with sudden amazement. I am going over a sand bar. Just about the time all of this calculates in my little computer of a brain I look off to my port side and those little swells I was riding in that were 4 to 6 collide with the sand bar I just passed over. Well if you are an experienced seaman you know what happens next. When the swells hit the sand bar they stand up and become easy 10 footers.

I am fortunate, JusCrewZen has been designed to handle waves like this. She is a sound and heavy boat. However, if you remember, I am turned beam on to these waves now and I catch one full broadside before I am able to turn around. I look at my inclinometer and cringe as the degrees of heal climb higher and higher. 10 degrees, 20 degrees, 30 degrees, oh SH@T. I am working the helm and get her turned around finally, thank god.

I just kept chanting to myself follow the channel, you are almost there. I quickly look at my pilot information so that I can navigate by the bridge and into the harbor and one little sentence sticks out to me now. “Use the water depth to guide yourself through the narrows and into the deeper water of the harbor.” What kind of BS is this. Its nighttime and all of the water is the same color. There has got to be channels markers, right. Wrong. There is nothing and I am still very worked up from the sand bar incident.

Well you can calm your nerves. I made it into the harbor fine. Dropped anchor and collapsed on deck from the exhaustion.

You know what they say, if you goto sea and return and don’t have a story to tell then you really were not at sea.

This part of the voyage was fairly uneventful. I was only going to be traveling about 30 nautical miles. When I woke up, the winds were still blowing 30 knots. As a single handed sailor with a manual windlass, this is going to pose an issue.

The winds are going to make the anchorage I am in even smaller. I am going to have to be quick and get the anchor all the way up before I drift into something. Joy, this is going to be fun. (Notice high levels of sarcasm here)

Now as you know there is always more than one problem that pops its little head up when you are trying to do something. Count on it. The second I start raising the anchor chain I see that it is coated in this mud that could be easier described by saying that it was stickier than super glue. It would have been easier chipping concrete off with a q-tip than trying to get this stuff off. It was nasty. I did not have time for this. I determined that I would just have to was out the anchor locker later and endure the stinky mud smell down below. I cranked and cranked. The chain was extra heavy because of the mud. I finally got it up and ran to the helm and got underway.

Ultimately this trip was uneventful. I pulled into Lulus, just so that I could give one of my best friends a hard time. Since his help sailed right past it and refused to stop and let him eat there. I enjoyed Lulus, it was much bigger than I thought it would be.

I headed off about 4 in the afternoon. I made it to Wolf Bay just before dark and dropped the anchor out in the middle of the bay. I was alone and secluded. I watched a beautiful sunset, and nestle into the boat for the evening. I only have 15 miles to go to reach the anchorage I have been dreaming about in Pensacola.

The next morning I wake up to dolphins. They are amazing. It doesn’t really get any better than this. This is what it is all about.

I hoist the anchor and get moving. This is the location where you can watch the water go from muddy brown to a clear emerald green. It is pretty amazing. When you leave Texas, Pensacola is the first place that you can say you have really started cruising.

We were snorkeling the Windjammer wreck off of Loggerhead
Key when it occurred to me….. I float
like a fishing bobber.

I’ve always been a tad more buoyant than my friends. When I was young I could jump off the diving
board and my head would never go under the water. And today it was confirmed again. I was swimming behind four other people today
and I noticed how their bodies angled slightly downward, so that their legs
were about six inches to a foot under the surface. I then took notice of my own body and
realized that from my head to below my butt; my body was on the surface.

I tried to get my body to do what theirs were doing and
after about five minutes of being unsuccessful and expending a heck of a lot of
energy, I gave up. I was also a little
discouraged because I couldn’t swim down to get a closer look at the 600 lb
grouper or the 2 large lobsters. Every
time I tried it was like my butt was a balloon and it was refusing to go below
the surface.

I guess I shouldn’t be too upset about this. Especially since I’m learning to love snorkeling. Being buoyant seems to come in handy when you
need to mess with your mask or snorkel and you don’t have to tread water,
instead you can just sit in the water and get your stuff done. Or when you have a cramp and can stay afloat
while being completely straight and vertical while you flex your foot.

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">So fine, I can be like a fishing bobber. <span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">

And for my random picture of the day "Tiniest Hermit Crab EVER!!!" I squee'd, yep, not ashamed of it.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Oh my gosh! I am
officially a Barracuda magnet. We went
snorkeling two different places today and both times I was stalked by
Barracuda. Sometimes two at a time. They would start out kinda far away and each
time I turned around they had gotten closer. And of course when I turned around they would
play the “you don’t see me” game.

The water here in the Dry Tortugas is amazing. The deep water is a deep but bright blue,
turning to turquoise as it gets shallower.
